Embracing Change for Collective Impact. This year’s Summit theme reflects our optimism for the future and our recognition of the rapid change happening in our sector and in technology. True to NetHope’s legacy, our collaboration to explore, understand, and chart a course  to help our sector use technology well is key to achieving our respective missions.  With a renewed focus on working together, we can fully realize the promise of technology to impact our work, our organizations and our world.

Exploring the Gender Gap: Why Do We Need to Focus on Women?
Limited Capacity seats available

Fundamentally, greater involvement of women means more successful ICTD programs, but most ICTD projects fall short on effectively serving women. What is this “gender gap” we hear about all the time, and why is it important for all ICTD practitioners to focus on it? In addition to equity and fairness, what are the tangible benefits for women, society, and ICTD projects when women are considered a different user group than men? This talk will explore these benefits, discuss actionable strategies for reaching and involving women, and provide examples of effective gender-balanced ICTD efforts that do not threaten men or jeopardize women -- which are often the outcomes of poorly-considered gender and technology programming. After discussing some of these issues, participants will get the opportunity to “workshop” their own ICTD projects under a gender lens… and leave with new insights and strategies to employ.

Keynote: Address by Jan Egeland, Secretary General, Norwegian Refugee Council
The promise of technology to have a transformative impact on development and conservation is well-accepted. Global NGO leaders want technology to maximize impact, donors expect technology integration to achieve efficacy and measure results, and program leadership are under pressure to be innovative in their approaches. But what expectations do CEOs have? How do CEOs want technology used to expand programming into hard to reach communities or coordinate aid for complex situations? How is, or should, technology changing our work, and what new approaches should we be embracing?

Cloud Services from a Legal and Security Perspective
Limited Capacity seats available

Many customers today use one or more of Microsoft Cloud Services; Office 365 and Azure are popular examples! But what does this shift from owning or sourcing traditional infrastructure to renting Cloud-based infrastructure actually do for your options to store personal or otherwise sensitive data? And what does it mean that the EU data protection agency workgroup (Article 29) has accepted Microsoft's efforts in the area of cloud-data protection? And what about security requirements in general? In this session you'll receive a clear message on all of these topics and some perspective on a number of the legal and security aspects of cloud computing, such as geolocation of data and data processing rules and regulations.

Cyber Security: Handling Attacks and Preventing Future Strikes
Limited Capacity seats available

Cybersecurity is a hot topic, but security out in the field is still a challenge. In disaster relief and humanitarian response, there is often little or no security presence and very few IT staff to support it. Consequently, security incidents may go unnoticed by the victims. Cisco Tactical Operations has been able to document active cyberattacks against humanitarian organizations during the responses to Ebola in West Africa, Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu and the earthquake in Nepal. This session will share information about these attacks and ideas about how organizations might better secure their field operations in resource-limited environments.

Digital Payments to Financial Inclusion
Participants in mobile transactions face different obstacles as they seek to enjoy the financial integration promised by the availability of mobile banking and transactions. Lack of numeracy and poor digital literacy often plague the demand side: participants in digital payment programs want to have access to technology and understand its value added, but cannot enjoy those benefits because they can't use a keyboard or may not be able to read or understand a text message. The supply side is answering this gap by allowing financial agents to perform transactions for clients, saving time but at the expense of client's agency, self-reliance and in some cases, safety. Panelists come from the private sector banking and technology industries, as well as the nonprofit world to offer their perspectives and hopes for collaborative action.

Excelling as a Virtual Organization: What's Next?
Limited Capacity full

Over the past 10 years many of our organizations have become increasingly virtual. This is a worldwide trend. 13 percent of the total population of the European Union can be classified as virtual workers and 63 million Americans will be virtual by 2016. This trend is fueled by the proliferation of broadband, collaboration tools and the willingness of employers to be more flexible. Let's explore what we can do as CIOs to empower our NGOs to excel at being virtual.

The problem is that NGOs do not always clearly explain their problems in a way that demonstrates a clear role for technology. Lunch - TechTalk Meetups: 3 words to help disaster response
Location management is key to the delivery of effective humanitarian services. Knowledge about the precise location of facilities, hazards, resources and boundaries is essential to the delivery of life-sustaining support systems for humanitarian field operations, especially in environments that are particularly challenging. Alphanumeric codes are complex and varied and there is limited alignment in operational use between countries, companies and agencies. This means that data collection, the communication of that data, and on-the-ground response all suffer. What3words addresses this issue and is being used around the world to help make deliveries in the favelas of Brazil, distribute medicine in the townships of South Africa and bring solar lights to the slums of India.

How to Build a Sustainable Information Security & Privacy Capability
Limited Capacity seats available

NGOs often forget to pay attention to information security and privacy. With fairly limited resources - financial and otherwise - what strategies should agencies use to effectively protect their organizations, employees, and beneficiaries? What are some possible quick wins - audits, insurance, incident response plans, and incident response agreements with security firms? How should these plans be staffed? How can we leverage each other to produce a fully functioning InfoSec & Privacy unit? This session will attempt to answer these questions and solicit ideas from attendees on how to collaborate on solutions.

UAVs for Relief: Where Drone Technology and Collaboration Meet
Limited Capacity seats available

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or "drones" have been incorporated into a number of relief and development projects over the past two years. In order to build upon these efforts as a community of practice and improve coordination and effectiveness of this tool, new agreements, practices and institutional structures will need to be created. We must facilitate the deployment of UAV projects, share lessons learned from these deployments and share data within both protected and open formats. This session builds upon the two-day pre-Summit humanitarian UAV workshop and will facilitate the development of practical recommendations and plans for future interagency collaboration around UAV projects.

Keynote: The Pendulum of Creating Change
Attempting to change the world often begins with an unbridled passion to make a difference. With great hopes and few resources non-profit founders are able to use force of will to garner support and create impact. Yet, in these early stages few real investments are actually made. Operational infrastructure lags just when investment is necessary for future scaling. For organizations that grow into larger institutions years later, lack of operational infrastructure becomes very clear very quickly. The pendulum swings, requiring unexpectedly large investments in technology and other operational components to remedy years of relative neglect. In this session, we'll explore how to smooth the path sustained change by incorporating the principles that allow so many new age technology organizations to reach real scale.

Collaborating Through Maps: Hands-On GIS Workshop
Limited Capacity seats available

This full-day workshop aims to foster collaboration between consortium members on the use of Geographic Information technologies and provide hands-on training in the latest technologies with participants Story-maps used to share situational awareness during emergencies are simple to use and do not require specific GIS skills to operate. Interagency collaboration facilitated by story maps causes the sum of work to be greater than the individual components.

The workshop will begin with presentations from Esri, NetHope and consortium members on current uses of Geographic Information technologies, and evolving GI strategies, then move to hands-on training in GIS software and publishing web-maps. CIOs and current GIS users within consortium member organizations, will gain hands-on experience in GIS as well as connections to other organizations working on similar GI challenges.
